When to throw away the rulebook

Winging it Emma Isaacs Review

“Nothing magical happens when you go to work at 9 am, leave at 5 pm, do a yoga class, catch up on some Netflix and fall into bed. Magic to me is all that stuff that happens when you don’t have set plans; it’s the stuff that happens at the extremes. It’s in these extremes – the risks, the fear, the unexpected, the fun – that ultimately define who we are and the impact we make." Emma Isaacs

I've had the pleasure of reading Emma Isaac's new book - "Winging it" - and wow. This book is a breath of fresh air in what can be a frazzled daily grind.

Emma Isaac's is the founder of the booming networking group, Business Chicks. I've attended a bunch of their events and have always left feeling inspired, motivated and connected.

Emma has managed to capture all this and more in her latest book drawing from some seriously cool interviews.

Part memoir, part inspirational business book, Emma shares the turning points in her business including the moment she decided to buy Business Chicks.

“One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that you don’t always have to accept what people tell you.”

What I love about this book is Emma's permission to throw out the rule book, or how we think things should be done, and move beyond everyone else's opinions and to just go for it!

I was also VERY relieved to see a fresh perspective on the concept of failure.

Yes failure can teach us some very powerful lessons and yes, it can be a necessary evil that comes hand in hand with running your own business, but it does not feel good and when you are right in the thick of it, you'll wonder if it is all worth the stress.

Its pretty frustrating to see failure painted anyway other than horrible when you are in it - cause it is! Thankfully Emma agree's but doesn't let that stop her.

Emma is the mother to 5 (yep, five!) children and walking proof that it really is possible to achieve those wild scary goals we dream of late and night when we can't sleep.

Business Chicks now boasts over 45,000 members national wide which is incredible. Providing high-value networking events sharing practical tips and down to earth stories from success icons like Richard Branson, Kate Hudson, Seth Godin and more!

Emma draws on this interviews to provide some fantastic gems in her latest work and as much as I'd love to share them all, I'm restricting myself to 3:

  • Don't wait for every detail to be perfect before you act! Just go for it and luxuriate in the knowing that done feels better than perfect
  • "Winging it" is perfectly okay. Most of the time we don't know all the answers, and that's okay. Most of the histories great success stories did not know all the answers either. "Winging it" is saying "Yes" and learning as you go.
  • Failure does not mean you failed! Yes it will feel pretty icky and you might think about running away a thousand times, and that is okay. Failure is just an opportunity to course correct and go again. Don't let it keep you down.

“I’ve had bucketloads of failures. In the past I’ve tried to do too many things, I’ve run two or three businesses at once — I had a fitness studio that completely flopped because I wasn’t passionate about it. It needed my complete focus, so the big lesson I learnt was to only attempt a business if I can give it my full, undivided attention.”
